Vernon County is located in the Driftless Area of Southwest Wisconsin. The Mississippi River runs along its western border. The Kickapoo River meanders through the county. The county offers beautiful scenery and lots of outdoor activities such as canoeing, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, snowmobiling, skiing, and more.

The county is home to a number of Amish families. The first Amish came to northern Vernon County in the early 1970s. Their culture is based on traditional values and practices that date back to the 16th century. Horse drawn buggies are a common site on the country roads of Vernon County. Please remember that they do not wish to be photographed up close. You can purchase Amish made items at local farmers markets and as well at their home businesses located on the back roads. There are no sales on Sundays.
In 2021 the population of Vernon County was 30,915. The county was founded in 1851.The county seat is located in Viroqua.
