Sparta
Sparta, the county seat of Monroe County, was incorporated in 1852. It is located in the rolling hills of western Wisconsin along the La Crosse River. In 2020 the population was 10,025. It was named after the Greek city-state of Sparta.
Sparta claims to be the “Bicycle Capital of America.” The first railroad bed to be converted to a bike trail was between Sparta and Elroy. The city is the junction of the Elroy-Sparta and La Crosse River bike trails. In addition to biking, the area offers kayaking adventures, city parks, walking trails, and fishing.
Sparta is 28 miles from La Crosse and 117 miles from Madison.
