Soldiers Grove
Soldiers Grove, located along the Kickapoo River in Crawford County, has a population of 554. It was founded in the 1850s. Originally it was called Pine Grove, but the name changed in 1867 to Soldiers Grove to honor the soldiers who had camped there during a war about 30 years prior. In 1866 the first general store was built and the first hotel opened. In the late 1800s, farms were switching to dairy farming and tobacco became an important crop.
Soldiers Grove offers a variety of events and things to do including seasonal festivals, Fun Days, Art Festival, sports competitions, camping, outdoor activities, local parks, etc.
Soldiers Grove is about 48 miles from La Crosse and about 88 miles from Madison.

Gays Mills
The Village of Gays Mills, famous for its apple orchards, is located in Crawford County in the Kickapoo Valley. The town is named after James B. Gay, a civil engineer from Indiana who built the first sawmill and dam. In 1865 he, along with his brothers, built the first flour mill in the area.
Seasonal festivals, apple and berry picking, hiking, cross country skiing, hunting, horseback riding, snowmobiling, fossil collecting, fishing, and canoeing are just some of the activities people can enjoy in and around Gays Mills. The village has a population of 521.
Gays Mills is about 52 miles from La Crosse and 86 miles from Madison.
